The Sugar Palm Research, Information, and Trade (SPRINT) Center facilitated a three-day skills training on kaong production and processing technology for Camarines Norte State College (CNSC) on September 28-30, 2022 at Hostel Tropicana, ÌÇÐĶÌÊÓƵapp – Don Severino de las Alas Campus, Indang, Cavite. The training was attended by 10 faculty and staff of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, CNSC-Labo Campus, headed by Director Ricardo D. Diño and Dean Arden Peejay L. Ezaki.
The overview of the CvSU-SPRINT Center and Introduction to the Kaong Plant were discussed by Mr. Junser P. Magpantay, director of SPRINT Center while Mr. Jhon Laurence B. Herrera imparted Kaong Sap Tapping Process and Harvesting. Right after the discussion, a field demonstration on kaong sap tapping process and harvesting was facilitated by Mr. Joel M. Astudillo and Mr. Florencio C. Flores.
On the second day, Engr. Richelle Mae D. Olpot-Mendoza from the College of Engineering and Information Technology – Department of Food and Agricultural Training discussed kaong sugar and vinegar processing, which was followed by a hands-on activity on kaong sugar making. Meanwhile, Dr. Teddy F. Tepora, Manager of CvSU – Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) oriented the participants on licensing agreements and technology transfer.
The participants also visited the technology adaptors of SPRINT Center – Magallanes Women’s Club Cooperative in Magallanes, Cavite, and Queentown Farm in Sitio Portugal, Barangay Tambo Malaki, Indang, Cavite. The training was concluded with the awarding of certificates to the participants.
The two institutions are set to sign a Memorandum of Agreement/Understanding soon. (Jhon Laurence B. Herrera)
